- Description- The art department, of Vincennes University, is in need of a new building located on campus to house all and only the visual arts. These visual arts include drawing, painting, sculpting, woodworking, printing, photography, and design. One of the major problems of the art department is that they are located in the Humanities building along with other majors. The art department is in need of a building in order to showcase art work and provide art majors and art classes a building of their own.
Concept
The art department of Vincennes University is in need of a new building located on campus to house all and only the visual arts. These visual arts include drawing, painting, sculpting, woodworking, printing, photography, and design. One of the major problems of the art department is that they are located in the Humanities building, along with other majors. The art annex is also another problem with the art program. Currently, the art annex is located off campus in a large garage type building. In order for students to go to class, the must walk across campus and over railroad tracks. Another problem is that the art gallery is located in the humanities building along with the art department but the art department is located on the other side of the building away from the art gallery.
The proposal is to build a new building with class rooms, art laboratories, two art galleries, lecture halls, and offices for professors. I want to try to incorporate other buildings on campus as much as I can into this new building. I also want to try to design a building with a traditional, yet contemporary look and an industrial feel. I, personally, would like to incorporate a natural flow and a curve to the exterior and interior to the new building. Every museum that I have been to has some sort of industrial atmosphere as well as a very contemporary appearance and yet a traditional theme. Tall ceilings and easy to maintain floors are very important in this overall appearance and atmosphere.
While touring the current art facility with the program director, I learned that art is more than just drawing and painting. Art is the expression of creativity or imagination of a human being. Photography, sculpting, ceramics, and printing are just some of the visual arts that should be included in this new art building. Overall, traditional values of a small city and a contemporary appearance with an industrial atmosphere should be made present with this building design.
